Roots

As Christians, we are all called to do the work of ministry. As Paul instructed Timothy towards the end of his life, we need to guard the deposit. For there to be a deposit to guard, there must be a deposit received. For Timothy, this took place over nearly twenty years of discipleship and training, in addition to serving in his local church community before Paul selected him. We, likewise, are called to go deep into discipleship and training to prepare for our turn to carry on the work of ministry. As Paul wrote to the Colossians, we needed to be rooted, built up, and established. Like a tree planted by steams of water, yielding fruit in its season, we need to allow our roots to run deep. This is a call to discipleship, and a commitment to the local church community.
